Are you in a season where your time with Jesus feels... stale? You're showing up, you're reading, you're praying—but nothing's landing. The words feel flat. Your mind wanders. You're going through the motions, but the connection you're craving just isn't there.
Here's the truth: sometimes faithfulness doesn't mean doing the same thing harder. Sometimes it means doing something different.
If your quiet time feels stuck, you don't need to push through with sheer willpower. You might just need to shake up the rhythm. Here are some unconventional approaches that might breathe fresh life into your time with God.
1. Pray Someone Else's Words
If your own prayers feel empty or repetitive, stop trying to come up with original language. Borrow from those who've prayed before you.
Pray through the Psalms as if they're your own words. Pray the Lord's Prayer slowly, pausing after each line. Use a prayer book or liturgy—written prayers aren't less authentic, they're a gift from the broader Church. Sometimes the best thing you can do is let someone else's faithfulness carry you when your own words run dry.

2. Go Sit Outside
Physical environment matters more than we think. If you've been sitting in the same chair, at the same table, at the same time every day, your brain might be on autopilot before you even open the page.
Take your Bible to the park. Sit on your porch. Read in your car before you go into work. Walk around your neighborhood and pray out loud. Let the change of scenery wake up your senses and remind you that God isn't confined to one corner of your house.
3. Write a Letter to God
Not a prayer—a letter. Address it to Him directly. Tell Him what's actually going on in your life, what you're struggling with, what you're hoping for. Write like you're talking to someone who already knows you completely but still wants to hear from you.
You don't have to be polite or spiritual-sounding. Be honest. Be messy. Let the act of writing slow you down enough to notice what's really on your heart.
4. Sit in Silence
If words aren't working, stop using them. Set a timer for five or ten minutes and just sit quietly. No music, no reading, no agenda. Just you and God in the same space.
Silence feels uncomfortable at first, especially if you're used to filling your quiet time with activity. But stillness creates room for God to meet you in ways that noise never will. You don't have to make something happen. Just be present.
5. Focus on One Verse All Week
Instead of reading a chapter a day, pick one verse and stay there for the entire week. Read it every morning. Write it out by hand. Memorize it. Pray through it. Let it marinate.
Depth often matters more than breadth. Sometimes the breakthrough comes not from covering more ground, but from letting one truth settle all the way into your bones.
6. Ask God One Question
Come to your quiet time with a single, specific question for God. Not a theological debate—a personal one. "What do You want me to know today?" "Where am I not trusting You?" "What's one thing I need to let go of?"
Then sit with it. Read Scripture with that question in mind. Pay attention throughout your day to where that question surfaces. God often answers not in a lightning bolt moment, but in a slow unfolding.
7. Do Something with Your Hands
If sitting still makes you restless, engage your body. Color a verse. Sketch what a passage brings to mind. Go for a walk and pray with each step. Knead bread dough while you talk to God.
Worship isn't confined to stillness. For some of us, our bodies need to move in order for our minds to settle. Let your hands help your heart focus.
8. Listen to Scripture Instead of Reading It
Download a Bible app and listen to Scripture while you do something else—washing dishes, folding laundry, driving. Hearing the words can bypass the part of your brain that's tired of reading and open up a different kind of attentiveness.
You're not multitasking—you're letting the rhythm of another voice carry the truth into your awareness in a new way.
Meeting Over Method
None of these ideas are magic formulas. They're simply invitations to approach God in ways that might feel less stuck, less obligatory, less like you're checking a box.
The goal isn't to find the perfect quiet time method. The goal is to meet with God—and sometimes that requires us to set aside what we think we're supposed to do and try something that actually connects.
